About the Green Commute Challenge

Challenge yourself and your coworkers to bike, walk, carpool, ride the bus or streetcar or vanpool to work this fall.

The 2022 Green Commute Challenge is a free competition among Kansas City area commuters to reward taking sustainable transportation options to work. For six weeks, from Sept. 19 through Oct. 28, members of employer-based teams can log their green commute trips to earn points and get entered in weekly drawings for prizes from local businesses and makers. At the end of the Challenge, prizes will be awarded for categories like most green commute trips completed, best social media, and more.

By participating, not only will you help yourself by saving money, but you will also support your community, play a role in improving local air quality, and become part of a larger network of people interested in sustainable transportation in the region. (Plus, did we mention the prizes?)

Are you ready to Green Commute? Registration opens Aug. 15.

Why Be a Green Commuter?

Christina Hoxie on a bike

“I ride my bike to work for the sheer joy of it! It’s a great way to start and end my day with exercise, seeing the other walkers and bikers on my route, and just a great relaxed frame of mind. I also feel like I’m doing what I can to reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the Midtown to Brookside area.”

- Christina Hoxie, Owner of Hoxie Collective and Green Commute Challenge Participant

“I’ve walked to my job at KU Medical Center for almost seven years now. I don’t spend money on gas or a gym membership, and I don’t spend time and anger battling traffic or fighting for parking spots. I get some sunshine on my face most days (some snow, wind, or rain on others, but that’s all part of the fun). I encourage people to use the Green Commute Challenge as an opportunity to explore greener, healthier ways to get to work! Find a commute buddy! Bike lanes are expanding across the city and buses are free!"

- Carissa Walter, Employee at University of Kansas Medical Center and Green Commute Challenge Participant
